Blow flies are larger than house flies and are easily recognized by their metallic colors, such as green, blue, or copper. They make a distinct buzzing sound and lay eggs on decaying meat. Depending on the species, their larvae develop into adult flies in 7 to 15 days. These flies are usually found near garbage, pet waste, and spoiled food, making them a nuisance for homes and businesses.
Since 1989, the Oriental latrine fly, a type of blow fly, has been a common problem in Southern California. These flies are often seen near trash bins and shady areas during hot weather. If larvae are found near a house, they may migrate indoors and become a nuisance when they mature. Good sanitation and waste management are crucial in controlling blow fly populations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) has a distinctive flying pattern, hovering in rooms without resting on food, making it less of a contamination risk compared to other house flies.
They lay their eggs in decomposing vegetable matter, compost, or animal waste, especially from pets like rabbits or poultry. With a life cycle of 24 days, they develop from egg to adult. While a nuisance, their preference for decaying organic matter means they pose less of a threat inside homes.
The false stable fly, or Muscina stabulans, is slightly larger and stouter than the house fly, with a dark gray body. Unlike the true stable fly, it doesn’t bite, but it may enter homes and lay eggs on spoiled food.
The larvae of this fly are commonly found in decaying plant matter and animal excrement. The life cycle of the false stable fly lasts around 14 days. Though it doesn’t bite, its presence indoors can be irritating, particularly when eggs are laid. Knowing its habits aids in better pest control.
Black garbage flies are small, shiny black insects about 1/5″ long. These pests thrive in garbage waste, especially in rural areas with inconsistent trash collection. While they are not usually found in large numbers in urban homes, poor waste disposal can attract them.
They develop quickly, with a life cycle of around ten days. Proper garbage management can help reduce their numbers.
Though stable flies look like house flies, they have a sharp, pointed beak for biting. These pests feed on animals such as horses and cattle but may also bite humans during wet weather when they come indoors.
Stable flies are not just irritating—they pose a threat to pets and livestock. They breed in areas with decaying organic matter, manure, and urine-soaked straw. Regularly cleaning these areas helps reduce their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are larger than common house flies and feature a checkered abdomen. They are gray with black stripes across the thorax. Unlike other flies, flesh flies give birth to live maggots instead of laying eggs. The maggots thrive in spoiled meat, dead animals, and excrement such as dog waste. Flesh flies are commonly found near decaying snails or carcasses.
Flesh flies can complete their life cycle in just eight days. They tend to appear near decaying organic material. Spotting large, slow-moving flies with a checkerboard abdomen may signal a flesh fly infestation.
At Clairemont Pest Control, fly control starts with a detailed property inspection. We look for breeding areas like garbage bins, standing water, and decomposing organic material, identifying various fly species, such as blow flies, drain flies, and stable flies.
We also assess your plumbing for any leaks or blockages that could attract flies. Using specialized tools, we locate larvae and adults in concealed areas. This thorough inspection allows us to tailor treatments specifically to your fly infestation.
Ensure the indoor and outdoor areas are cleaned before the technician arrives so we can easily locate the source of the infestation. Our experts will conduct a thorough inspection to rule out any underlying plumbing issues.
For drain flies, we use effective products to target the larvae and adult flies within the drains. We treat around food preparation areas, taking care not to spray directly on food surfaces. Traps are placed in strategic areas to capture flies.
Clairemont Pest Control delivers monthly inspections and treatments aimed at fly-prone areas such as drains and garbage zones. We focus on early elimination to prevent flies from spreading.
Using eco-safe products, we effectively manage flies like drain flies and blow flies. Our recurring monthly service ensures that your property remains fly-free throughout the year.
