The American dog tick, often called the wood tick, is prevalent across the U.S., excluding the Rocky Mountain region. These brown ticks with grayish-white spots can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. Their bodies are oval and flat, with six legs as larvae and eight as adults.
Although they typically feed on dogs, they can bite humans and spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These ticks are most active in spring and early summer. Regular pet checks and yard maintenance can reduce the risk of a tick infestation.
The Brown Dog Tick, noted for its reddish-brown color, commonly infests dogs and thrives in the warm climate of California. Although dogs are their preferred hosts, these ticks can bite humans when no canine is available.
Adults measure around 1/8″ and can swell to 1/2″ when fully engorged. They have six legs as larvae and eight legs as nymphs and adults. It’s important to remove these ticks from pets quickly to prevent health problems. Regular pet checks and cleaning their living spaces can help control tick populations.
Pacific Coast ticks are commonly found in shrublands and trails from Oregon to Baja California, and they are present in Clairemont. These ticks are most active during cooler months, particularly April and May. Adults typically feed on large mammals like deer, cattle, and horses, but will also bite humans and dogs.
These ticks spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis is another concern for livestock. Approximately 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, often confused with Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is prevalent along the Pacific Coast, including British Columbia, where it is a primary carrier of Lyme disease. These ticks thrive in environments such as forests, grasslands, and near water sources, but can also be found in scrub-shrub habitats. Though related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, this species is more commonly found on the West Coast.
Adults are most active from early winter through early summer, while nymphs peak in the spring months, especially from April to June. Nymphs typically feed on small animals like rodents and lizards, rarely targeting humans or pets. Regular yard maintenance and clearing out debris can help minimize tick populations.
